Weekend Results

The Nike Fleet Feet Racing Team had a great day at the Huntsville Half Marathon on Saturday with the Candace Jacobs and Caitlin Morris placing 1st and 2nd for the women and the men taking 11 of the top 25 places.   Personal bests were set by Brad Schroeder, David O'Keefe, Eric Fritz, Katie Maehlmann, James Falcon, TIm Pitt, Brett Wilks, Rick Maehlmann and Christy Scott.

Nike Fleet Feet Racing had a great weekend, which started off in Huntsville at Running of the Bulls 5km where George Heeschen captured another win in a time of 17:08.  Candace Jacobs was first female in a time of 18:30.  The team took the top 6 places and 9 of the top 10!

At the Christian Women's Job Corps 5km in Arab, Alabama, hometown favorite Tim Pitt was the overall winner in a time of 18:57.

At the first annual Bill Dukes 7 at 7k race in Decatur, Kathy Youngren was the overall female winner in 30:13 and Tim Vinson was the overall male master winner (2nd overall) in 28:04.

At the Falcon 5km (not named after him!) in Smyrna, Georgia, James Falcon ran a speedy 18:02 which earned him 3rd overall.

At the Rocketman Olympic Relay, Eric Charette ran the 10km portion of Team Hodges in 35:58 as the team pulled out the relay win in 1:58:19.  Team owner Dink Taylor was on the second place relay team as he logged a 39:43.  David Rawlings set a PR with a 2:50:17 and Lisa Rawlings hit 3:09:44 and was 7th in her age group.

2011 Cotton Row Runs

Nike Fleet Feet Racing smoked the already hot Cotton Row Runs on Memorial Day, lead by Brandon York's personal course best 32:01, earning him 5th overall and a strong showing by Candace Jacobs who was 2nd overal female in the 10km.  The team racked up 11 overall or age group awards.

In the 5km, David O'Keefe set a personal best with a 16:45 for a 3rd place finish and Donald Bowman was the Men's Master winner.  The team racked up 9 overall or age group awards.

Also this weekend, Linda Scavarda ran the 12 hour Run for Kids Challenge at Veteran's Park in Hoover, AL on Saturday. Despite temperatures in the low 90's, Linda completed 45 miles (in 11:32) and earned 1st Overall Female.

This was a great weekend for racing in Huntsville as the Nike Fleet Feet Racing Team took 11 of the top 12 places at the Cookie Dash 5km, including all of the top 9 and overall male, female and masters male awards!  The effort was lead by Brandon York who repeated as overall winner, lowering his mark from last (15:47) year down to 15:41 this year.  Eric Charette and Kevin Betts were also on the men's podium, finishing 2nd and 3rd overall.  Donald Bowman was 4th overall and men's master while Kathy Youngren ran away with the women's overall title in 20:51.

Kevin Betts Age: 33 Laceys Spring, AL Brief Biography Been running competitively since 8th grade. AL State Champ in the 1600 m and runner-up in the 800 m (Class 5A for Eufaula High School). Ran cross country and indoor/outdoor track for 4 years in college at Georgia Tech; captain of the cross country team my junior and senior year. First team GTE Academic All-American for outdoor track in 1999; second team in 1998. Married to Tonia Betts (also ran for Georgia Tech) and have three wonderful daughters (Sage, Autumn, and Rose). Currently working at SAIC as engineering director for the Space System Development Division for various NASA and DoD programs. Board member for our church (UUCH) and also teach Sunday School in our Religious Education program." Short Term Goals Would like to break 17 minutes for 5K and 35 minutes for 10K in the next 1-2 years. Also would like to continue to do a few local triathlons for a change of pace. Long Term Goals Continue enjoying running and racing and remain injury free to the best of my ability. Give back to running community as an assistant coach with one of the local high schools as well as becoming more involved with track club activities as our children grow older. This was a great weekend for the Nike Fleet Feet Racing Team from Huntsville once again, staking up more impressive finishes at distances of 5km to 50 miles! Leading the charge was David Riddle, running his first ever 50 mile race at JFK50. David notched an impressive 5:53:09 and a second place finish. David's time proved that he is among the elites in this country at ultra running as is time was the 8th fastest time in 48 years of JFK. Dink Taylor ran 7:07:52 for 31st overall and DeWayne Satterfield ran 7:17:44 for 38th overall. There were 1014 FINISHERS, making it the largest ultra in the US. Official Results

Earlier in the day on Saturday, Blake Thompson and Eric Fritz also competed in the Krispy Kreme Challenge, which consists of a 2 mile run, a dozen donuts, and a 2 mile run back without puking. Not only did Blake win, but he defeated last year's champion, David Rawlings. Before the start of the race, Blake and Eric also completed a loop at Dizzy, then ran the Donut Run, before returning to Dizzy where they finished the 50km in under the time limit. This concoction was coined the "Dizzy Donut" by Rob Youngren in 2009. Also competing in the Donut Run were James Falcon, Brad Schroeder and Joey Butler, who vowed the words, "Never again."

On Sunday, the annual Jingle Bell Run, Kevin Betts and Candace Jacobs took overall honors in the 5km. After training his No Boundaries 5km group for this even, Josh Kennedy ran a 20:52 (10th OA and 2nd in his age group). Kathy Youngren, Katie Maehlmann and Lisa Rawlings also ran very well, placing in their age group on a very warm and windy day.

The Nike Fleet Feet Racing Team from Huntsville had a great weekend all around the country in representing Fleet Feet. 

On Saturday, Greg Reynolds proved to be a top local triathlete at the HTC WAAY 31 Sprint Triathlon finishing a strong second place overall.  Kevin Betts aalso finished in the top 10 overall with a 7th place finish.  Rob Youngren competed in the open division, but did so on his 36" wheeled-unicycle and still managed 73 place overall.

Out west, Eric Charette ran the Squak Mountain Trail Half Marathon in Issaquah, Washington which had over 3,800' of elevation gain (a mile and half if total elecation change) including a 1,500' straight climb from miles 2 to 4.  He managed to place 2nd overall in a time of 1:55:05.

Weekend Results

Here are the results from this weekend for the Fleet Feet Racing Team.

In Huntsville on Saturday morning there were several team members who ran the David McKannan MDA Run for Research 5km. Kevin Betts was using this race as 'rust-buster' before Cotton Row and he had a strong showing with a 17:41 and 2nd place overall. Conrad Meyer was 5th overall and 1st Men's Master with a 19:30.  Linda Scavarda was the 2nd overall female.

At the Jesse Owens 10km in Moulton, Alabama, Donald Bowman ran 35:54 and captured 3rd overall and was first Men's master. Jon Elmore finished just behind Donald in 36:55, continuing his fast times posted this year in road races. Official results are not available yet, but Eric Schotz and Joe Francica were 7th and 8th overall. Updates will be made once the results are available form the Shoals Trac club website.

At the HTC Harry Williams All Comers Track Meet, Shane O'Neill broke the 5 minute mile barrier in his first official attempt. After a fast 2:26 first 809 meters, Shane paced along with team mate Eric Charette for the final two laps in a time of 2:32 to clock in at 4:58.13. Racing Team captain Marty Clarke put on another great event that drew quite a few runners in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1 mile and 5km distances. Many Racing Team volunteers were out in force, including Linda Scavarda, Carl Smith, Eric Charette, Greg Reynolds and Brandon York.

Ambassadorship

I try to encourage runners of all ages and abilities, and do my best to present running as a lifelong activity that is a great way to stay in shape, meet other committed people, and as an important part of a balanced lifestyle. I do my best to train hard and race well in the local events that I enter, and I try to look at competition as a chance for all of us to help each other do our best on that given day, rather than in a more adversarial light.

Fleet Feet Racing Team dominates at Winter Winds

If the snow on Sunday morning would not have been melted by the sun, it would surely would have been after the scorching performances by the Racing Team at  the Huntsville Track Club's Winter Winds.

In the 2 mile race, Eric Charette took the lead before the 1/2 mile mark and held on for the overall win.  Charette managed a negative split on the rolling hill course, running 5:21 in the first mile and 5:17 in the second mile.  Rob Youngren made it very interesting with a surge up the Double Tree Lane hill and finished just two seconds behind for 2nd place.  Fleet Feet Racing captured the top 5 overall spots with George DeWitt, Donald Bowman and Kevin Betts finishing 3-4-5.

On the female side. Candace Jacobs broke the 12 minute mark, finishing at 11:59 and taking the overall win by 40 seconds over her nearest competitor.

The 4 mile race started just 30 minutes after the 2 mile race started, so runners doubling up had just 15 minutes at most to get ready to race again.

Lucas Sieb of Scottsboro proved to be too much for anyone to handle as he ran away with the victory in 21:14.   George DeWitt came back and was top male masters runner, finishing 4h overall.  Candace set a state age record with her 25:10, making it a perfect two for two on wins for the day.

Who’s Racing This Weekend

This is the first weekend of the spring road racing season in Huntsville, though with temperatures in the 30's or less, it certainly does not feel like it.

The Fleet Feet Racing Team will have at least 10 members running the Huntsville Track Club's Winter Winds on Sunday starting from Grissom High School. This event offers two races back to back starting with a 2 mile and then a 4 mile. Many runners will compete in both events.

At first glance, Candace should have a shot at top honors for females, but the men's side looks wide open for anyone willing to dig deep.

What an amazing weekend for the Fleet Feet Racing Team at Rocket City Marathon! Despite a tough southern headwind for much of the first half of the course, most were able to capitalize on the late stage tailwind to run great times. David Riddle takes the overall win with a negative split 1:15/1:11 and runs away from the pack after the turn on Chaney Thompson. DeWayne Satterfield places 13th overall and is 3rd Men's Master. Caitlin Heider and Candace Jacobs finish 4th and 5th female, respectively.
