2012 Fleet Feet Racing: David O'Keefe

Name: David O'Keefe
Date of Birth: October 13, 1973
City: Owens Cross Roads, Alabama

Brief Biography

My day (and sometimes night) job is working at Huntsville Hospital as an ER physician. I am married to an incredible woman, Lori. We have 3 children ages 11, 7, and 5 who challenge us every day with their energy. We are active at Rivertree Church where I lead a small group. My passion is for the unknown adventures in life that come in knowing Jesus. In the last 4 years, I've been running more and more. Running keeps me connected to creation. I love to compete and see how fast and far I can go. It is an endless challenge, and there is nothing better than running our local trails to recharge my body, mind and soul.

  • Under 16:40 for 5K
  • Under 35:00 for 10K
  • Complete my first 50 mile run
  • Under 1:17 for the half marathon
  • Under 2:44 for the marathon
  • Under 4:30 for Mountain Mist
  • Stay healthy and balanced

Long Term Goals

  • The 100 mile distance is fascinating, but scary at the same time. Would love to give it a shot one day.
  • Stay healthy and slowly improve.

A fun fact others might not know

I could jump off 2 feet and hang on a basketball rim in high school, but I could never dunk anything more than a tennis ball

How have you been an ambassador to the sport of running?

The best way I have been an ambassador is through volunteering last year. I was able to help set up several races so others could run. I also led group runs, giving runners a guided tour of an upcoming race. My most rewarding experience was leading a pace group at the Rocket City Marathon last year. Helping runners achieve their goal time in the marathon was a memory I will never forget. Talking about an upcoming race or telling the story of a recent race has given some friends the motivation they need to begin running for themselves.

This Weekend

The Nike Fleet Feet Racing Team will be sending 4 members to Old Dominion 100 miler in Woodstock, Virginia, including James Falcon (his first hundred miler), Eric Fritz (his first mountain hundred), Blake Thompson (coming off of a 2nd OA at Lean Horse 100) and Dink Taylor (ultra running veteran).  These guys have been training since the beginning of the year for this race and Eric Fritz summed it up well by saying: "I brought a pair of pants to wear after the race that are 2 sizes too big for me and I brought a belt with no buckle."  This race has 14 major climbs totalling 14,000' of climb.

Christy Scott will be running Shadow of the Giants 50km, which is 33 magic miles of scenic trails through the Sierra National Forest. Last minute updates on the website indicate there was tons of residual deep snow and it was impossible to cross giant fallen trees...

David O'Keefe will be running the Golden Gate Dirty Thirty 50km on meandering single track trails through peaceful aspen groves, grassy meadows, tranquil pine forests and rocky ridges with majestic views of snow capped mountains in Golden Gate Canyon State Park, Colorado.

Best of luck to the entire team in where ever your Fleet Feet take you.

This Weekend

This is a big weekend for the Nike Fleet Feet Racing Team from Huntsville all around the area starting with the flat and fast River City Run 10km in Decatur, Alabama.  This course has produced most of the personal records at 10km for people in north Alabama and if the temps can stay down (highs Saturday will be in the mid 80's by noon) this year should be no different.  Leading the team this weekend will be Eric Charette, Marty Clarke, Greg Reynolds, David O'Keefe, Shane O'Neill, David Rawlings and Lisa Rawlings. This race is directed by team member Eric Schotz and aided by Jon Elmore.

Elsewhere, new team member Erik Debolt will be taking on the GO! St. Louis Half Marathon on Sunday.  Last year this event drew over 10,000 runners and with Erik's speed he will be eying a top 25 finish.

As a side note, former team member and long time Huntsville resident (now living in Cincinnati) David Riddle will be in Madison, WI for the 100km national championships.  David will be aiming for a fast finish and if he is at or near the top the reward would be a spot on the national 100km team.  Here is David's preview write up from his blog.  http://riddleruns.blogspot.com/2011/04/mad-city-preview.html

Good luck to the entire team where ever your fleet feet take you!

2011 Team: David O'Keefe

David O'Keefe
Age: 37
Owens Cross Roads, AL

Brief Biography
I have lived in Huntsville since I was 10. I graduated from Auburn University where I met my beautiful wife Lori, and then completed medical school at the Univ. of South AL. I currently work in the ER at Huntsville Hospital. Lori and I have 3 amazing children and we are challenged every day by them. I was always a team sports person, and would play any game with a ball. However I also loved to hike and spend time outside. I never considered running enjoyable just for runnings sake. Even though I ran a 5:12 mile in middle school, I hated it at the time. Three years ago a friend introduced me to trail running, and I have been hooked ever since. There is nothing better than running the local trails to challenge your body, refresh your mind, and renew your spirit in God's creation. I am the kind of person that loves to see how far I can push myself. I'm a dreamer, and I want to see how fast I can be if I train harder than anyone else is willing to do. I love running because the concept is so basic at its core, yet it can be as challenging as you want it to be.

Short Term Goals
Break 17:00 for the 5K. Break 35 minutes for the 10K. Run a sub 2:50:00 marathon. Meet others this year who love to run. Help local runners reach their goals by promoting group runs and leading a pace group for the Rocket City Marathon, Future goals for Cotton Row run and Monte Sano 10K are 36:00

Long Term Goals
Stay healthy and make sure running is always fun! Keep my life in healthy balance with God, family, friends, and running. Run a premier 50 mile, 100K and 100 mile race while there is still time to run fast. Would love to run a sub 2:40:00 marathon in the next 3 years.

This Weekend

This weekend is the 5th Annual McKay Hollow Madness trail race atop Monte Sano State park in Huntsville, Alabama. This ever-changing course has finally settled into a great 25km featuring four climbs, with the final ascent to the finish up a waterfall along Death Trail. This race has been won by the Nike Fleet Feet Racing Team in 2008 (Rob Youngren), in 2009 (David Riddle) and joining the Racing Team this season is the winner from 2010 (David O'Keefe). Last year Katie Maehlmann took the women's title. There are many race team members who will compete on Saturday, including Eric Charette, Dink Taylor and others. Rumor has it that Eric Fritz and James Falcon will attempt the first McKay Hollow double! The race is directed by team member Blake Thompson and is sponsored by Fleet Feet.
