This Weekend
For a select few runners, this weekend marks the culmination of a long journey and countless hours of training. What started possibly as long as 18 months ago with a qualifying marathon will come to fruition on Monday as they board the buses in Boston and head west toward Hopkinton, MA to compete in the legendary Boston Marathon. While nearly ALL of our team members made the qualifying standards, only few chose to enter and test their limits against the best runners in the world. Shown below are the team members and their bib numbers if you want to follow along on Monday morning.
Tim Vinson - 325
Dink Taylor - 1545
Shane O'Neill - 1639
Eric Patterson - 3669
Dana Overton - 8965 (Injured)
Linda Scavarda - 13971
Lisa Rawlings - 15502
Suzanne Taylor - 17089
Madelyn Patton - 18317
Elsewhere, Eric Charette will be running the fast, downhill course that is the Salt Lake City Marathon. Eric will be pacing Anne Noble as she looks to be amongst the top female runners in the field.
Good luck to all of you where ever your fleet feet take you!

This Weekend
This is a big weekend for the Nike Fleet Feet Racing Team from Huntsville all around the area starting with the flat and fast River City Run 10km in Decatur, Alabama. This course has produced most of the personal records at 10km for people in north Alabama and if the temps can stay down (highs Saturday will be in the mid 80's by noon) this year should be no different. Leading the team this weekend will be Eric Charette, Marty Clarke, Greg Reynolds, David O'Keefe, Shane O'Neill, David Rawlings and Lisa Rawlings. This race is directed by team member Eric Schotz and aided by Jon Elmore.
Elsewhere, new team member Erik Debolt will be taking on the GO! St. Louis Half Marathon on Sunday. Last year this event drew over 10,000 runners and with Erik's speed he will be eying a top 25 finish.
As a side note, former team member and long time Huntsville resident (now living in Cincinnati) David Riddle will be in Madison, WI for the 100km national championships. David will be aiming for a fast finish and if he is at or near the top the reward would be a spot on the national 100km team. Here is David's preview write up from his blog. http://riddleruns.blogspot.com/2011/04/mad-city-preview.html
Good luck to the entire team where ever your fleet feet take you!

2011 Team: Shane O'Neill
Shane O'Neill
Age: 38
Huntsville, AL
Brief Biography
Started running about 4 years ago, mostly recreationally. Started training in the fall of 2008 to run the Rocket City Marathon. I have seen all of my times get faster as a result of increased training and knowledge since then. I enjoy being able to push 1 or 2 of my four boys (and soon a girl!!) in my jogging stroller. It has been a pleasure to have them with me at local races to cheer their Daddy on and run in the fun runs. I look forward to being able to run with them in the years to come. My blessed wife, Charity, supports this habit.
Long Term Goals
2:4x:xx marathon, 16:xx 5k, 34:xx 10k; be the fastest ER doctor in town; ironman triathlon

This Weekend
This weekend kicks off the 2011 season for the Nike Fleet Feet Racing Team in Huntsville with a flurry of events.
George Heeschen, Eric Charette, Lisa Rawlings, David Rawlings, James Falcon, Shane O'Neill and Dink Taylor will be running the half marathon at Oak Barrel in Lynchburg, TN. This scenic course runs through the countryside of rural Tennessee and has a climb from from 800' at mile 3 to 1050' by mile 5.2 and continutes to climb to 1,125' at mile 7 before a fast downhill finish.
Rob Youngren and DeWayne Satterfield will be at Frozen Head State park for the 2011 "running" of the Barkley marathon. The Barkley is considered one of the toughest 100 mile races in the world. It has 52,900 feet of climb (and 52,900 feet of descent), more than any other 100 mile race, more than the 33,000 ft. of climb at Hardrock, and more than the 45,000 ft. at Nolan's 14. The Barkley consists of 5 20-mile loops with no aid except for water at two points. The cutoffs for the 100 mile race are 12 hours per loop. The 60 mile "fun run" has a cutoff of 40 hours, or 13:20 per loop. To prove you completed each loop, you must find 9 to 11 books (varies) at various points along the course and return a page from each book. Here is a link to pictures from 2010, including the newly added section of running under the prison.

Greg Reynolds, Lynn Curry and Marty Clarke will be at theScholarship 8km in Huntsville. This two loop course is in downtown Huntsville and has continually rolling terrain.
Dink Taylor will run back to back 1/2 marathons with a Sunday appearance at the Talladega 1/2 marathon.
Good luck to the entire team where ever your fleet feet take you!

Weekend Results
This Nike Fleet Feet Racing team from Huntsville had a very successful weekend from Tennessee to Wisconsin to Colorado to Alabama.
In Alabama, Jon Elmore was the overall winner at the Hoedown Hustle 5km on Saturday with a time of 17:52 in Phil Campbell, Alabama. That marks at least 4 wins if not more for Jon this season.
In Florence, Wisconsin, Eric Charette won the inaugural Keyes Peak Trail Marathon in a time of 3:19:58. The course featured a river crossing at mile 18 where runners could either swim the deep section or make their way downstream to the shallow river crossing. Being the first one to the crossing and not knowing the depth of the water, Eric chose the swim in the fast current and rapids. After a few strokes, he floated down to the roped run cross!
Official Results
In Lake City, Colorado, team members Rob Youngren, Kathy Youngren and Josh Kennedy tackled the brutally tough San Juan Solstice 50 miler. The entire race is run above 8500', with two climbs that ascend from 9000' to 13000'. Early reports back from Josh were that Rob and Kathy finished in 13:28 and Josh in 13:51. In Josh's words, "Mile for mile, toughest course I have ever been on!"
Official Results (not yet posted)
In Bell Buckle, Tennessee, Shane ONeill was 17th overall at the RC Cola / Moon Pie 10 miler in a time of 1:05:38. The heat didn't seem to bother Whitney Hollingsworth, who was 2nd female master in 1:19:19 nor Randy McFarland who logged a 1:12:16.

The team will be supported daily by crew chief Josh Kennedy and will be joined by team mates Joey Butler, Eric Fritz, Blake Thompson, Dink Taylor and Kathy Youngren serving as auxillary crew or pacers.
(From the Strolling Jim 40M website): For 32 years, the first Saturday in May has meant one thing in the scenic hills of Bedford County, Tennessee; the return of the Ultra-Marathoners. And the Ultra-Marathoners have kept coming back. Coming back to stroll the quiet streets of Wartrace and Bell Buckle, enjoying the picturesque homes and quaint shops. Coming back to celebrate the end of winter with a run in the inspiring springtime beauty of the Highland Rim. Coming back to be a part of one of the US most competitive road ultras, and to match their times against the fastest runners of the past 32 years. Coming back to strive for a coveted Gold Shirt. Coming back to feast on the bountiful repast at both pre- and post- run festivities. But, most of all, the Ultra-Marathoners keep coming back because, at the Strolling Jim (40 miler), every runner is a hero, an honored guest, and a welcomed friend.
Competing from the team are Joey Butler, Eric Fritz, Dink Taylor, Tim Vinson, DeWayne Satterfield and Kathy Youngren.
In Ohio, Lisa Rawlings and David Rawlings will be running the Flying Pig Marathon. This great 26.2 miler looks to be soggy as weather forecasts call for 70% chance of rain all weekend. David is a mere 42 seconds away from a Boston Qualifying time, so wish him luck.
In Madison, Joe Francica will be running the Run Through the Roses 10km. This 1st Annual event starts at Bob Jones High School and rolls over the gentle hills of Madison. Joining Joe is fellow team mate Katie Maehlmann. Katie has been training in the early morning hours with a group of gals from Madison known as the "Crazy Girls" who are all running the race.
In Huntsville, Christy Scott and Linda Scavarda will be joining the Fleet Feet Cupcakes running the relay for life at John Hunt Park. This all night event looks to have some fun games and all night entertainment.
Shane O'Neill will seek out a gavel (award) at the Law Day 5km. This course is flat and fast and hosted by the Huntsville-Madison County Bar Association.
In Decatur, Jon Elmore and Eric Schotz will be looking for the win at the Steeple Chase 8km. This new event runs past many of the historic churches in town, thus the label 'steeplechase'.
Whitney Hollingsworth will be heading west to Corinth, Mississippi where she will be running the 29th Annual Coca-Cola Classic 10km.
On Saturday, Rob Youngren and Eric Charette will start their attempt to set the Fastest Known Time on the 335 mile Pinhoti Trail. Youngren and Charette have created a website to track the progress of the effort which can be found at http://pinhotitrailadventurerun.blogspot.com/ They plan on averaging 50-60 miles per day which if everything goes according to plan, would put them on the northern terminus on the 7th day of running. Full details of the run can be found here.

Weekend Results
Despite the tough conditions this weekend across the South with rain, mud and cooler than normal temperatures, the Nike Fleet Feet Racing Team displayed some great trail running talents.
In Huntsville, the trails of Monte Sano State Park were nearing the worse conditions ever for any race (according to many who competed) as the 4th Annual McKay Hollow Madness Trail Run was contested. With a few exceptions, this race covers the most difficult parts of the mountain and this year the mud along "Slush Mile" and along Arrowhead Trail was pretty fierce. This didn't stop David Purinton or Eric Charette who finished 2nd and 3rd overall, minutes behind the leader. Dink Taylor captured the Men's Masters division. On the women's side, Fleet Feet also took places 1-2 with Katie Maehlmann winning overall and Christy Scott taking 2nd place.
This race is directed by team members Blake Thompson with assistance from Rob Yougnren and Kathy Youngren. Out there volunteering from the team were Linda Scavarda (course sweep) along with James Falcon and Josh Kennedy (Aid Station #2).

At Frozen Head State Park, DeWayne Satterfield completed 1 loop of the Barkley Marathon (insanely difficult 20+ mile loop repeated 5 times) in 9:44:19. To give you an idea of the insanity that is "Barkley", DeWayne noted that this years course now has 12,000' of elevation climb, PER LOOP! Last year DeWayne completed the "fun run" which is three loops.

Brief Biography
Started running a couple of 4 years ago, mostly recreationally. Started training in the fall of 2008 to run the Rocket City Marathon. I have seen all of times get faster as a result of increased training and knowledge since then. I enjoy being able to push 1 or 2 of my four boys in my jogging stroller. It has been a pleasure to have them with me at local races to cheer their Daddy on and run in the fun runs. I look forward to being able to run with them in the years to come. I am blessed to have a wife, Charity, who supports this habit.
Short Term Goals
Run mid 16's in 5k; run mid 34's in 10k; go under 2:50 in a marathon; continue to place/win in AG and challenge in overall standings.
Long Term Goals
Run Boston.
Personal Records
I have experienced first hand the expertise of the staff at Fleet Feet and the desire to promote running in Huntsville by the owners. I can therefore speak with personal knowledge as to why they should buy at Fleet Feet. Also, the improvements I have experiences over the past couple of years I can in large part attribute to Fleet Feet. For runners who are interested in improving their racing times, I can again from experience, direct them to Fleet Feet.
