This past weekend atop Monte Sano in Huntsville, Alabama was the 6th running of McKay Hollow Madness. Most first timers and many veterans have said that this is one of the toughest races they have ever attempted. Rocky, technical trails, covered in mud this time of year and plenty of climbing make this a great race. This is actually the 7th year of the event, but in 2011 the weather was so foul that the race had to be cancelled.
Eric Charette managed to earn the overall victory this year in a time of 2:03:52. Since the change to the modern course distance of just under 15.5 miles, only Brandon Mader has run the course faster. This year Brandon had to drop out early which opened up the window for Charette to capitalize. Finishing in 2nd place was Rob Youngren with a time of 2:11:38. Rob was also a past winner, back in 2008. Crossing the finish line with broken ribs after a nasty spill and capturing the top men's master award was Dink Taylor in 2:16:41. DeWayne Satterfield and James Falcon were 5th and 7th overall respectively.
On the women's side, Katie Maehlmann finished in 2:37:31 for her 3rd consecutive win at McKay. Katie also owns the modern course record of 2:30:34 set in 2012. Christy Scott was 2nd female in 2:54:59.
The race is directed by team mate Blake Thompson and plenty of team members where there to volunteer, including Kathy Youngren.
