Weekend Results

This was a great weekend for racing in Huntsville as the Nike Fleet Feet Racing Team took 11 of the top 12 places at the Cookie Dash 5km, including all of the top 9 and overall male, female and masters male awards!  The effort was lead by Brandon York who repeated as overall winner, lowering his mark from last (15:47) year down to 15:41 this year.  Eric Charette and Kevin Betts were also on the men's podium, finishing 2nd and 3rd overall.  Donald Bowman was 4th overall and men's master while Kathy Youngren ran away with the women's overall title in 20:51.

This Weekend

This weekend is the hottest ticket in town, the Cookie Dash 5km.  The CD5k course is held in south east Huntsville and involves running around two cones and a cul-de-sac, making it tough to post fast times.  The Nike Fleet Feet Racing Team will be represented by many volunteers and in the race by HTC Gran Prix points leader Greg Reynolds, followed by Erik DeBolt, Sean Allan, Donald Bowman, Marty Clarke, David O'Keefe, Shane O'Neill, Tim Pitt, David Purinton, Dink Taylor, Brandon York, Kathy Youngren and Eric Charette.

Good luck to the entire team where ever your fleet feet take you!

This Weekend

For a select few runners, this weekend marks the culmination of a long journey and countless hours of training.  What started possibly as long as 18 months ago with a qualifying marathon will come to fruition on Monday as they board the buses in Boston and head west toward Hopkinton, MA to compete in the legendary Boston Marathon.  While nearly ALL of our team members made the qualifying standards, only few chose to enter and test their limits against the best runners in the world.  Shown below are the team members and their bib numbers if you want to follow along on Monday morning.

Tim Vinson - 325
Dink Taylor - 1545
Shane O'Neill - 1639
Eric Patterson - 3669
Dana Overton - 8965 (Injured)
Linda Scavarda - 13971
Lisa Rawlings - 15502
Suzanne Taylor - 17089
Madelyn Patton - 18317

Elsewhere, Eric Charette will be running the fast, downhill course that is the Salt Lake City Marathon.  Eric will be pacing Anne Noble as she looks to be amongst the top female runners in the field.

Good luck to all of you where ever your fleet feet take you!

Former team member and long time Huntsville resident (now living in Cincinnati) David Riddle ran the MadCity 100km on Saturday and placed 2nd overall with a time of 6:59:12, which should earn David a place on the world 100km championship team, representing the United States when this event is held in the Netherlands this fall.  Amazingly, this was David's first 100km!  Be sure to check in with his blog for a post race recap.  http://riddleruns.blogspot.com/  According to RealEndurance.com, this was the 184th fastest 100km time, ever.

This Weekend

This is a big weekend for the Nike Fleet Feet Racing Team from Huntsville all around the area starting with the flat and fast River City Run 10km in Decatur, Alabama.  This course has produced most of the personal records at 10km for people in north Alabama and if the temps can stay down (highs Saturday will be in the mid 80's by noon) this year should be no different.  Leading the team this weekend will be Eric Charette, Marty Clarke, Greg Reynolds, David O'Keefe, Shane O'Neill, David Rawlings and Lisa Rawlings. This race is directed by team member Eric Schotz and aided by Jon Elmore.

Elsewhere, new team member Erik Debolt will be taking on the GO! St. Louis Half Marathon on Sunday.  Last year this event drew over 10,000 runners and with Erik's speed he will be eying a top 25 finish.

As a side note, former team member and long time Huntsville resident (now living in Cincinnati) David Riddle will be in Madison, WI for the 100km national championships.  David will be aiming for a fast finish and if he is at or near the top the reward would be a spot on the national 100km team.  Here is David's preview write up from his blog.  http://riddleruns.blogspot.com/2011/04/mad-city-preview.html

Good luck to the entire team where ever your fleet feet take you!

I've completed two marathons in 2010, the second being Huntsville with a time of 3:36, making BQ! Other than running I've been training for triathlons for the past 5 years and I also play Ultimate Frisbee for HUSL. Running is my outlet; I don't know what I would do without it.

Brief Biography
Started running about 4 years ago, mostly recreationally. Started training in the fall of 2008 to run the Rocket City Marathon. I have seen all of my times get faster as a result of increased training and knowledge since then. I enjoy being able to push 1 or 2 of my four boys (and soon a girl!!) in my jogging stroller. It has been a pleasure to have them with me at local races to cheer their Daddy on and run in the fun runs. I look forward to being able to run with them in the years to come. My blessed wife, Charity, supports this habit.

Brief Biography
I began running in 7th grade and have been running since. I competed in high school and college in both cross country and track. I competed for the University of Alabama in Huntsville from 2003-2007. I enjoy being active whether it is through running or other activities such as ultimate frisbee and cycling. After completing my NCAA eligibility I took some time off of running but I am now back in the swing of things and anxious to get back in shape. I have worked at Fleet Feet Sports since 2007 and I also enjoy volunteering at local road races.

Short Term Goals
One of my short term goals it to get back under 17 minutes for 5k. It has been a few years since I've done that. I would also like to go sub 35:00 for 10k and sub 1:20 for the half.
Long Term Goals
Stay healthy and injury free is key! Other than that I have always wanted to break 16 minutes for 5k (not sure if its possible but I'd like to give it an honest effort, never know till you try). I would also like to break 3 hours for the marathon at some point.

Brief Biography
I have been running since I was 5. I grew up in New Hampshire within a community of runners and it always came naturally to me. I went on to run competitively at Boston College and have been doing so up until now. Last year I became a member of the Fleet Feet Racing Team. Running has carried me through a variety of terrains and I have been fortunate to join teams and see many parts of our world through the sport. My first occupation was a teacher and I also had the amazing opportunity to coach high school cross-country. I've since received my BSN in nursing and currently am employed in private practice for a local physician. My husband Nate and I have 3 children; Conor (7), Chloe (5), and Quinn (3 months).

Short Term Goals
After the recent birth of my daughter, my short term goals are to become strong again and to increase my endurance and speed injury free. I would like to break 20:00 in the 5K and 43:00 in the 10K. I am running in my first 1/2 marathon in April; the Music City Marathon.

Long Term Goals
I hope to compete in my first marathon this year and qualify for Boston. I am also planning to train for the triatholon circuit again.

I was born and raised in a very large family in Western New York, on the shores of Lake Erie. Although I ran track in high school, I did not really acquire a true love for the sport until I was in my early twenties. After receiving my Bachelor's Degree at SUNY Buffalo, I attended graduate school at Fordham University in the Bronx, New York. While at Fordham, my love for running flourished, as I was able to fall in love with running through the enchanting Central Park. I ran my first marathon in New York City in 1998. In 2003, I met my husband and he convinced me to leave my life in New York City behind, so I packed my belongings and headed to Huntsville, Alabama. I have been a Catholic school teacher for the past eleven years and currently teach at Pope John Paul II Catholic High School in Huntsville.

2011 Team: Linda Scavarda

Linda Scavarda Age: 27 Toney, AL
Brief Biography I was born in Waukegan, IL and we moved to Cullman, AL in October of 1992. My first official race was the Hershy Track meet in 5th grade. From there I played basketball from 7th grade to 10th grade and also attempted track in Middle school where I threw the shot put and discuss. One day I was asked by the high school coach to come out and run over the summer. I walked most of the 2 mile course, but continued to go back. I ran XC and Track all through high school and help set some records. I was 2nd at the XC state meet my senior year and 8th my junior year. I recieved a scholarship to UAH for XC. Ran 4 years of XC and Track, set several personal records and was close to qualifying for Nationals for the 10k on the track. For XC I helped the team to 2 Conference Championships and 2 trips to Nationals. I now have my Masters of Accountancy. Currently working as a General Ledger Accountant. With working full time, I have become the lead coach for the 13.1 Training Program at Fleet Feet. I love helping other achieve their goals while acheiving my own goals as well. Short Term Goals Run Boston Marathon just as fast or fast than I did Rocket City in 2009. Continue to help others achieve their race goals. Continue to have fun and run fast! Long Term Goals Long term goals would be to eventually break 6 hours at Mt. Mist, run sub 19 again in a 5k, run a 100, and to do some crazy adventure running. Personal Records

Gregory Reynolds

Brief Biography
I grew up swimming from age 5 through college at a D2 school. I began running about 10 years ago to compete in triathlons and have been hooked ever since. I've made of a lot of good improvements in my running times over the last few years at all distances from the 5k to the marathon and I hope to continue improving. I enjoy the socialization that comes with running that I never had swimming and the Huntsville running community in second to none.

Short Term Goals
Last year I focused on the marathon to run a sub 3 hour. This year I am focusing on 5k through the half. I'd like to run under 17 in a 5k and under 1:19 in a half marathon.

Long Term Goals
My long term goals are to continue to improve my speed and indurance.

Brief Biography
I grew up in the St. Louis area and came to Huntsville in 2005 for work. I had always run to keep in shape, but didn't enter my first race until the Liz Hurley 5k in 2007. I caught the racing bug then and have tried to become more competitive ever since. I have developed a love for running and really enjoy the discipline and motivation required to run faster.

Short Term Goals
Run a marathon in under 3 hours. Run a 5k in under 17 minutes.

Long Term Goals
I just became a father so my biggest goal is to effectively balance my running life with my family life. To me, that means making the personal sacrifices necessary to be a great husband and father while continuing to enjoy the benefits of running.

Brief Biography
I am a native of North Alabama, born and raised in Athens, AL. I earned a BS in Electrical Engineering at UA Huntsville. I am a deacon at the Eastside Church of Christ in Athens. I am married and have 9 year old twin daughters.  I started running in 2008 just after losing 70+ pounds. I began running just to improve my aerobic conditioning, but training for the 2008 Cotton Row 10k got me hooked on running. I went from being unable to finish a 3 mile run to Boston Qualifying in less than 2 years. I have since run 4 marathons and 5 50k trail races. I am the race director for the Duck and Run 5k, currently the longest running annual race in Limestone County. I also organize occasional training runs in Athens, including a Sunday morning 10 miler that's been running for over 2 years.  I particularly enjoy long runs and tempo runs. I log my training and races at http://rocketcitytraining.blogspot.com/

Brief Biography
I grew up in Rockville, Maryland, just outside of Washington, DC and moved to Huntsville right out of college in 1989. Having never run competitively before, I started running when I was 35 to get more fit and try to increase my stamina for volleyball tournaments. Within 5 years I decided to quit playing volleyball to focus on my running and now have run almost 100 races of all distances from 5K to 100 miles. I have two wonderful daughters that keep me quite busy and a very supportive wife who lets me get a way with much more than I should.  I love the outdoors and feel most at home in the woods.

Short Term Goals
For the near term, I will continue to work towards volunteering as much as possible. My real goal for the year however, is to break 40 minutes in a 10k race. That's a significant increase over my current PR but I'm optimistic that I can pull it off with the right training.

Long Term Goals
My long term goals include being fit enough to run the Hardrock 100 mile race as well as finding the time to run "significant distance" on the Appalachian Trail. And, as with every runner I know, the only true long term goal is to have the ability to continue to run for many years to come.

Brief Biography
I was born and raised in central Kansas. There, I ran track for a few years in middle and high school. I didn't take running seriously, though, until I joined the Army. There, I learned that I had a natural gift for endurance. I ran mainly because it was part of the Army's physical training program, but I admit to liking it. At one of my duty stations, we had to do an annual 20K ruck march as part of a yearly fitness qualification. I chose to run it. and it was then that I understood the challenge of endurance running. I left the Army and took some time off from running. My mistake, like so many of us, was that my sedentary lifestyle allowed me to gain too much weight. I resolved to lose that weight and running seemed the most effective way. Iit has helped my other concerns for fitness: a better diet and other types of activities, like weight training. Running seems to be my mainstay activity for staying in shape but I also enjoy bicycling and swimming.

Short Term Goals
For 2011, new PRs in all distances in 2011, comlete in more triathlons, and perhaps run a 50K.

Long Term Goals
Keep my weight under control through running, maintain and increase endurance and strength, continue to run marathons in all 50 states, and complete a half-Ironman triathlon.

Brief Biography
I have lived in Huntsville since I was 10. I graduated from Auburn University where I met my beautiful wife Lori, and then completed medical school at the Univ. of South AL. I currently work in the ER at Huntsville Hospital. Lori and I have 3 amazing children and we are challenged every day by them. I was always a team sports person, and would play any game with a ball. However I also loved to hike and spend time outside. I never considered running enjoyable just for runnings sake. Even though I ran a 5:12 mile in middle school, I hated it at the time. Three years ago a friend introduced me to trail running, and I have been hooked ever since. There is nothing better than running the local trails to challenge your body, refresh your mind, and renew your spirit in God's creation. I am the kind of person that loves to see how far I can push myself. I'm a dreamer, and I want to see how fast I can be if I train harder than anyone else is willing to do. I love running because the concept is so basic at its core, yet it can be as challenging as you want it to be.

Short Term Goals
Break 17:00 for the 5K. Break 35 minutes for the 10K. Run a sub 2:50:00 marathon. Meet others this year who love to run. Help local runners reach their goals by promoting group runs and leading a pace group for the Rocket City Marathon, Future goals for Cotton Row run and Monte Sano 10K are 36:00

Long Term Goals
Stay healthy and make sure running is always fun! Keep my life in healthy balance with God, family, friends, and running. Run a premier 50 mile, 100K and 100 mile race while there is still time to run fast. Would love to run a sub 2:40:00 marathon in the next 3 years.

Brief Biography
I received my degree in Exercise Science from Wichita State University in 1999. I have worked as a Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor since 1998 and started my own training business in 2007. I began running consistently in 2002. I enjoy running all distances, but particularly enjoy the challenge of the ultra distances. My favorite distance is the 50k and favorite race, the mighty Mountain Mist, right here on Monte Sano. I enjoy helping others reach their fitness goals and improve their quality of life. I have helped many people train for and complete races of all distances thorugh both my career and coaching the Fleet Feet training programs. I have been married to my husband, Tony for 17 years and have two children, Courtney and Brandon who are very active in sports.

Short Term Goals
To run a 3:40 marathon and a sub 5-hour 50k. I am also hoping to finish in the top 5 women in my next trail 50k in June.

Long Term Goals
To improve on my times for the ultra distances, especially the 50k. I am planning on running one 100-miler per year, while picking a tougher course each time. I would like to continue to coach more progams for Fleet Feet in order to help get more people moving. I would like to help them expand and continue to inpsire people to run, walk, or just get out there and be active.
