Gear Review: Swiftwick Women's Vibe Compression Sock by Lynn Curry

Product: Swiftwick Women's Vibe One Compression Sock

Pricing: $12.99 per pair, available online at Swiftwick.com or locally at Fleet Feet Sports Huntsville

I have owned a plethora of running socks over the years and none have been worthy of review until I bought a pair of Swiftwick at Fleet Feet on a whim the day before setting out to run 15 miles of trails. After splashing through mud and running in the rain, I came home and my feet were completely dry- the sock was damp- but only to the touch and completely odor-free! Since that day I have purchased 4 pair. I wear them everywhere- to work, running, even around the house. I found myself thinking of who I could gift these to. You not only can choose the ankle height, but also the weight and cushioning. Swiftwick has revolutionized the customized sock for all sports. The website is interactive; allowing you to narrow search by sport, gender, type, performance, and sock height to name a few. It also has reviews based on compression, wicking, breathability, footbed thickness, and durability. My other running socks have paled in comparison to my Swiftwick. They have torn, shrunk, and stretched. I will continue to add Swiftwick to my stock. While my friends and family may not admit it at first, a gift of these socks will bring them back for more.

Lynn grew up in New Hampshire and ran at the division 1 level in college for both cross  country and track.  She moved to Huntsville five years ago and has been contributing to the Fleet Feet Racing Team both with her volunteerism and fast times.  Her team biography can be found here.

This Weekend

This weekend Eric Patterson will be chasing a major personal goal at the Albany Marathon in Albany Georgia. This flat and fast looped course is one of the top Boston Qualifiers in the country and has only 521' of elevation gain over 26.2 miles.  Eric is a great shape and should have no problem meeting his time goals.

Gear Review: Honey Stinger Gold Gel by Rick Mahhlmann

Product: Honey Stinger Gold gel – 1.3 oz

Ingredients: Honey, Water, Potassium Citrate, Salt, B vitamins

Nutrition Information: 120 calories, 50 mg Sodium, 85 mg Potassium, 29 g Total carbohydrates (from sugar)

Pricing: $1.29 for a single packet and $30.96 for a box of 24 from HoneyStinger.com

Impressions: I recently tried a Honey Stinger Gold gel during a long run. This gel is summed up with the first, sweet part of the brand name and the first ingredient listed – Honey. I wouldn’t have guessed there was anything but honey in this gel. Without making it obvious in the taste of the gel, Honey Stinger has included the Sodium and Potassium that are essential to replace during endurance activities. Something else very pleasant about the gel, I didn’t have to worry about squirting it near the back of my mouth or getting the gel down quickly because I enjoyed the natural honey taste. Even on a cold morning, the consistency of this gel was a bit thinner (less viscous) than honey, making it easy to dispense and swallow. Opening the packet with gloves while running was nearly effortless. I did manage to lose the tab I tore off to open the packet despite my attempts to save it for disposal. My only suggestion for improvement is to somehow make that tab easier to capture.

Summary: Honey Stinger Gold is worth trying if you enjoy simple, sweet, and natural as qualities in a gel.

Rick is an original member of the Fleet Feet Racing Team from Huntsville and together with his wife Katie have contributed tremendously to the running community since moving to Huntsville in 2000. His team biography can be found here.

Brief Biography

I was born and raised in a very large family in Western New York, on the shores of Lake Erie. While at Fordham, my love for running flourished, as I was able to take advantage of regular runs in the most beautiful park in the world--Central Park!! I ran my first full marathon in New York City in 1998. In 2003, I met my husband, left my life in New York City behind, packed my belongings, and re-located to Huntsville, Alabama. I have been a Catholic school teacher for the past twelve years and currently teach at Pope John Paul II Catholic High School in Huntsville.

Brief Biography

I love pushing myself to the limit and gravitated to running during high school since it allowed me to do just that. I have been training and running over the last 11 years, taking a partial break from 2006-2007 to have two children. During the last 11 years, I have run over 30 marathons and 50Ks, while also regularly racing in almost every distance leading up to the marathon as well. Though this averages to 2-3 marathons a year, I certainly haven't kept a steady pace like that over the last 11 years! I prefer the "marathon a month" philosophy and have found success running up to 6 marathons/50Ks with about a month in between each one.

I have completed marathons in 19 out of 50 states, have run 6 Mountain Mist 50Ks here in Huntsville, Alabama (my goal is 10), and qualified several times to run the Boston marathon (an earlier goal of mine). In 2004, I won the Huntsville Track Club Grand Prix Female award, was one of two women to achieve the first local "Grand Slam" award, and set several of my PRs. I have steadily been whittling away my times in every distance over the past 3 years. I had a nice comeback year in 2011 where I PRed in the 5K (19:55), half marathon (1:30:53), and marathon (3:15:33).

My husband and fellow runner, Rick, and I have two children, a son who is five and a daughter who is four. My children are my focus and my greatest life accomplishment.

Short Term Goals
  • To complete my 7th Mountain Mist 50K
  • To complete a marathon in my 20th state (Instant Classic Trail Marathon March 17, 2012)

Long Term Goals
  • Complete a marathon in every state
  • To continue running as long as I am able
  • To encourage a healthy lifestyle for my children

A fun fact others might not know

I am a twin, and my sister and I live in the same neighborhood in the same floor plan!

How have you been an ambassador to the sport of running?

I believe I am an ambassador to the sport of running through my every day actions and encounters with others. I encourage others through weekly training runs (I run three times a week with a group of about ten Madison women of varying levels of fitness. Several in the group completed their first half marathon this year. We all encourage and support each other.). I am on the sidelines with my children at many races, cheering for my husband and other runners and taking pictures of the runners to put on facebook. I volunteer at races and have paced runners for the past two Rocket City Marathons. In 2010, I started a runner's blog (http://howwerollkatiesblog.blogspot.com/). This blog has had over 9,600 page views since its inception in March of 2010. I am using this venue to meet and encourage fellow runners locally and across the country. My husband (and fellow FF Racing Team member, Rick) and I have found many ways to make marathon-level training and running possible with our young family.

How have you been an ambassador to the sport of running?

As a teacher it is a passion of mine to share running with my students. I have started a running club at my elementary school. This club is open to students in 3rd through 5th grade. It is designed to teach our students about the sport of running and to help set forth a healthy lifestyle. We teach our students that running is a fun and healthy activity. It is not just a punishment placed upon them by coaches of other sports. We teach our students the fundamentals of running and encourage them to participate in our school's 5k and in other local running events. Through this club I feel we teach students about the sport and help them realize it's benefits and opportunities.

Brief Biography

I was born and raised in central Kansas.I ran track for a few years in middle and high school, but I didn't take running seriously. until I joined the Army and, there, I learned that I had a natural gift for endurance. I mostly ran because it was part of the Army's physical training program, but I liked it. At one of my duty stations, we were required to qualify in a yearly 20K ruck march. I chose to run it, and it was then that I understood the challenge of endurance running. After over seven years, I left the Army and took some time off from running. Like so many of us, the year that followed was sedentary. What followed was weight gain. I resolved to lose that weight and running seemed the most effective way. Running has opened the door to other things. I have a better diet and take part in other types of activities, like weight training, cycling, and swimming. This had led to my intense interest in triathlons.

How have you been an ambassador to the sport of running?

I enjoy running and what it has done for my life. This excitement is contagious and I try to spread it around to those I know. In 2011 I helped and encouraged friends and family to take up running and let it effect their lives in a positive way. Of those I know that were already running, I tried to fan the flame and encourage them to continue to challenge themselves. I also volunteered at several races in 2011. At the AMRDEC 5k, Liz Hurley 5k, and Xterra 15k I only volunteered and did not race. I also helped out at several fun run events at Fleet Feet Sports this year (Skirt Chaser and Tri 201 time trial).

Brief Biography

Got inspired by my young children to start running in 2008 and have been logging miles since. Best race to date was probably the 2011 Army Ten Miler with a finishing time of 1:02:25.

Short Term Goals
  • So close to a sub-3hr marathon it hurts.
  • Run 10 mph for an hour.
  • Do a longer race.
  • Shave some more time off my PR's.
  • Stay healthy.

Long Term Goals
  • Sub-4hr 50k.
  • 100 miler (maybe).

Personal Records
  • 5km at 2011 Spooktacular on 10/2011 Time 18:06 - Fresh off Army Ten Miler training and not expecting anything special to happen.
  • 10km at 2010 Cotton Row on 05/2010 Time 40:46 - Cotton Row has my name. I don't feel like I have ever raced well there. I actually crush my 10k PR as a split in the 2011 Army Ten Miler (sub-39)
  • 10 Mile at 2011 Army Ten Miler on 10/2011 Time 1:02:25  - Great race. Trained hard. Set a tough target time and nailed it.
  • Half Marathon at 2011 Huntsville Half on 11/2011 Time 1:25:57  - Had a rough week of training leading up to this race and didn't have high expectations. Never felt good, but never really felt bad either. I was able to finish this one very strong which I haven't done in previous 1/2's.
  • Marathon at 2011 Rocket City on 12/2011 Time 3:02:09  - Thought the training was there to go under 3 hours, but there were lessons to be learned. Split the 1/2 in 1:27:30 and felt confident. At mile 19, twinges started in the right hamstring and cramps were soon to follow. Proud that I didn't give up because that would have been very easy to do that day. Next time.
  • 50km at 2011 RFH on 12/2011 Time 4:12:25  - Shocked with this one. The week this happened, I logged more miles in a single week than I ever had before with 83 miles. The next week, I squeezed out 90 miles.

Goal Races
  • Mountain Mist 50k in January 2012
  • Cotton Row 10k in May 2012
  • Army Ten Miler in October 2012

Brief Biography

I grew up in Rockville, Maryland, just outside of Washington, DC and moved to Huntsville right out of college in 1989. Having never run competitively before, I started running when I was 35 to get more fit and try to increase my stamina for volleyball tournaments. Within 5 years I decided to quit playing volleyball to focus on my running and now have run almost 100 races of all distances from 5K to 100 miles. I have two wonderful daughters that keep me quite busy and a very supportive wife who lets me get a way with much more than I should. I love the outdoors and feel most at home in the woods.

Short Term Goals

My only racing goal for this year is to achieve a silver buckle at the Western States 100. I'm sure I'll push for a PR here or there as well but that is all secondary to the buckle.

Long Term Goals

My long term goals include being fit enough to run the Hardrock 100 mile race as well as finding the time to run "significant distance" on the Appalachian Trail. And, as with every runner I know, the only true long term goal is to have the ability to continue to run for many years to come.

Brief Biography

I am a native of North Alabama, having been born, raised, and now residing in Limestone County. I was always the fat guy until I lost over 70 pounds about 6 years ago and then started running. Running wasn't how I lost the weight, but it has been key to maintaining a healthy weight and lifestyle.

I am the race director for the Duck and Run 5k, currently the longest running race in Limestone County. I maintain a blog that keeps the public informed of race performances of Limestone County runners. http://northalabamarunner.blogspot.com

Running, particularly racing, has changed my life. Through prayers, conversations, pains, joys, sights, and sounds on my runs I have learned much about God, nature, and myself. Through racing I have improved the skill of setting and working toward challenging goals. I enjoy races from 5k to 50k.

Short Term Goals

I must break 3 hours in a marathon! I'm so focused on this, that I don't have any other performance related short term goal.  I plan to introduce more young people in Limestone County to the sport of running in 2012.

Long Term Goals

Some time in my life, I would like to win a race, any race, anywhere, any distance.  I'd like to be the fastest runner in Limestone County.

A fun fact others might not know

I'm a huge mixed martial arts fan. I love the UFC, Strikeforce, and Bellator. I plan to start taking karate this year and I watch MMA any time it's on TV. My favorite fighter is Benson Henderson.

How have you been an ambassador to the sport of running?

I direct a race in Limestone County and volunteer often. I organize a weekly 10 mile run in Athens that has been running for over 3 years now.

I maintain two blogs about running. One is focused on my training and with it I attempt to inspire others to run. The other is focused on race performances by residents of Limestone County. I have built relationships with several Cross Country coaches in Limestone County and I encourage their students to embrace running.

I love to run and I truly want to share the positive change that running has made in my life with others.

Brief Biography

I was raised by my grandparents in a rural farming community. They taught me the work ethic needed for life (and for running!). I now have two beautiful daughters who like to watch dad do various crazy running antics. My lovely wife shares the passion that God placed in me and between us we strive to maintain a healthy balance of family time, work, and training. It was fun having them as my "pit crew" during the last days of the cross Tennessee race and watching them realize some achievements don't come easy...but with patience they can happen. I have been blessed in the ultrarunning society...I have won an ultra every year for the last 18 years, with over 55 overall wins at the various ultra distances.

Short Term Goals

To keep running to the best of my ability while maintaining a healthy family life. Keep injury free while running several ultras per year. This year: Mountain Mist, Black Warrior, Mount Cheaha, Barkley, and perhaps a solo-unaided attempt at the 500K Vol State Road Race.

Long Term Goals

I want to run Mtn Mist 50K until I'm at least 100 years old…that is if I can still make the cutoffs! I would like to compete in the Sri Chinmoy 6 day.

Most people know that in addition to running, I love to write...poems, articles, and have recently finished a novel (yet to be edited/published); however I also love to play the guitar and doodle at songwriting as well.

How have you been an ambassador to the sport of running?

I have been in the sort of running for over 25 years now - longer if you count high school! I have experienced just about everything in the world of running and, despite the countless miles, I can honestly say I still love it. I take pride is helping others in the sport, whether it is training advice, racing advice, or even personal advice :). I want to be the smiling, friendly ambassador of running, while still pushing my aged body as far as possible.

Brief Biography

Just your typical 25 year old male, born and raised in the Old Dominion of Virginia. Did a tad bit of running in High School after realizing that I was no good at golf and being told that XC runners got all the girls. I was pretty much hooked on the sport by the time that I realized that the latter was far from the truth, so after a remarkably mediocre high school career, I went on to run Division 3 cross country at Hampden-Sydney College, a small, private college in Southern Virginia. While there I had the pleasure of running under 4 different coaches in my four years of eligibility, but the opportunity to kick it old school and run track workouts on one of the few cinder tracks still remaining in use made it all worth while. I didn't quite set any land speed records while in college, but logging all the miles that I did over those 4 years certainly helped to keep the beer belly at bay and I improved just enough to trick myself into thinking that if I kept working at it, I might someday be good. I'm still waiting for that day to come, but nevertheless I've continued to train for races of all distances since entering this scary place known as the "real world" back in 2009.

I moved down to Huntsville a little over a year ago for my job not knowing a soul, and I can't thank the awesome running community of Huntsville enough for what they've done to make this place feel like home. I currently dabble in race distances from 5k up to the marathon on the roads, and in training you can typically find me running random mileage or getting my butt kicked in speed workouts by new Fleet Feet Racing team member, Andrew Hodges. When I'm not running, working, sleeping or eating, I like to enjoy the great outdoors via hiking and camping, read quality literature, and practice the mandolin in hopes of one day being good enough to tell people that I actually try to play the darn thing.

Short Term Goals

Continue to work hard and have fun with running in hopes of grabbing a few new PRs in 2012 and tackling some new challenges along the way. Looking to run another fast marathon to prove that my first sub 2:40 was not a fluke. Most importantly, I'd like to stay healthy all of 2012 and do my best to remember to bring my Nike racing flats to all the races I'm running.

Long Term Goals

Volunteer more. Run a race longer than 26.2 miles (Mountain Mist 2013!). Run a race in another country. Stretch more to avoid being crippled by the time I'm 30.

Personal Records
  • 2 Mile at Kelly Watt Memorial Cross Country Race on 11/2010 Time 10:36

  • Army Ten-Miler, Oct. 2012

  • A Marathon, 26.2 miles, Date: TBD

A fun fact others might not know

I once had the starring role as a speed limit sign in a public service announcement about obeying posted speed limits in neighborhoods. They called it "acting", but all I did was sit there while an attractive young lady broke up with me for holding her back in life. Sounds like real life to me. Video is available upon request.

How have you been an ambassador to the sport of running?

I always try to answer people's questions about running as best as possible or at least point them in the right direction to a person/source that knows more than I do. I'd like to get involved coaching at the high school level sometime in the near future.

I really enjoy the atmosphere of running and racing and would do my best to help other people enjoy this wonderful sport. I volunteer at as many races as I am available for. I help motivate co-workers from my office to get involved in the sport of running by giving them guidance, pointers and even run with them when I get the chance. There are many positives to running and I try to get those who are on the edge to see the benefits and get involved.

A fun fact others might not know

I could jump off 2 feet and hang on a basketball rim in high school, but I could never dunk anything more than a tennis ball

How have you been an ambassador to the sport of running?

The best way I have been an ambassador is through volunteering last year. I was able to help set up several races so others could run. I also led group runs, giving runners a guided tour of an upcoming race. My most rewarding experience was leading a pace group at the Rocket City Marathon last year. Helping runners achieve their goal time in the marathon was a memory I will never forget. Talking about an upcoming race or telling the story of a recent race has given some friends the motivation they need to begin running for themselves.

Brief Biography

I was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin and grew up in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula where I attended college at Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan. While there, I earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering and am a registered professional engineer.

In 2007 I moved to Huntsville, Alabama and that is where I now call home. Though born a Yankee, I've grown to like the way of the south and the many traditions that are embraced here.

I am a follower of Christ first and foremost, for I can do all things through Him who strengthens me (Phil 4:13). At the end of the day I am thankful for the many blessings that I have received even though I might not have been worthy of receiving them.

Running is one of my many passions, but it is only what I do, and does not define who I am. Running has made me a confident and strong man, but it also has made me humble to the gifts that I have been given. I try to return the gift to others through mentoring or coaching newer runners and passing on to them what others have passed on to me. I truly enjoy to spend time on rugged mountainous trails far off the beaten path.

I love to spend time with my beagles Prisoner of Azkaban Sirius Beagle (Siri) and Dawson’s Creek Josephine Lillian Potter (Fiina).  You can follow my ramblings on Twitter at @EricCharette or see the occasional tweet from my girls at @FiinaBeagle and @SiriusBeagle.

A fun fact others might not know

I taught Eric Charette how to blog. Just kidding, I do have to take partial credit or blame for creating that running monster. That was back in the day when he first got here and I could still outrun him. My Engineer Run 10k/5k story has always been an inspiration to him.

How have you been an ambassador to the sport of running?

I have help coach training at Fleet Feet Sports including Tuesday night track workouts, the first half marathon training group and Cotton Row training runs. I have coached high school cross country for the last five years. While coaching I have not only encouraged my runners but also their parents to participate in running. I have had parents complete who have completed No Boundaries, Next Steps and the Half Marathon training groups. I have also encouraged runners while working at Fleet Feet Sports.

A fun fact others might not know

I have a 1969 Hurst/Olds -- a very fast and rare muscle car.

How have you been an ambassador to the sport of running?

As a Master’s runner, I’m regularly approached by younger and older runners complimenting us "old guys" for being so fast. I take these opportunities to be a role model for all runners and positively influece their running by providing advice. I've also volunteered for HTC events, where these events would not take place if not for the tremendous volunteer effort behind the scenes. I’m a hardcore advocate for what Fleet Feet brings to the running community and I tell people every chance I get.
